Laura Yorke Literary Agent – This article about Literary Agent Laura Yorke and Laura York Literary Services is part of a series about literary agents and how to Find a Publishing Agent. Book Agent Laura Yorke is a literary agent with and the founder of Laura York Literary Services. Publishing Agent Laura Yorke is a veteran book editor, literary agent, publisher, and writer with more than three decades of experience worked in the publishing industry.
Laura Yorke Literary Agent graduated from Duke University in 1985, magna cum laude. She’s a native New Yorker who stated her publishing career with Simon & Schuster, where she thrived working as an editor for three of their imprints: Fireside Books, Summit Books and Simon & Schuster Trade. She was the youngest editor to attend the Editorial Board and buy her own books, opposed to editing for a senior editor. Some of those books became bestsellers.
After almost a decade, Literary Agent Laura Yorke moved to G.P. Putnam. There she was happy for four years. CEO Phyllis Grann frequently announced she “brought non-fiction to Putnam,” which was a gross exaggeration. Ironically, one of her most celebrated authors from Putnam was Jodi Picoult, a novelist.
From there, Laura Yorke Literary Agent went on to co-found the Golden Books Adult Trade Division with a former colleague from Simon & Schuster. Where they published books for family and women in every category. She then moved on to become the editor-at-large of Regan Books/HarperCollins. She eventually moved on from there because she wanted to experience other parts of the publishing industry. She co-authored Why Motor Skills Matter (McGraw-Hill 2004) with her son’s sensory integration therapist. She subsequently became a contributing editor to Reader’s Digest, where she wrote cover stories on people such as Phil McGraw and Uma Thurman, and brought the magazine’s editorial team to meet with all of the New York publishers and their Subsidiary Rights associates.
One day within that first year of working for Reader’s Digest, the wonderful Carol Mann said to Literary Agent Laura Yorke, “Laura, you are one of the best editors of your generation. If you don’t want to do that anymore, then come be an agent with me. You’ll still be doing a lot of editorial work.”
