She joined the agency in 2020. Book Agent Hafizah Geter earned her BA in English and economics from Clemson University and an MFA in poetry from Columbia College Chicago. She is an award-winning and widely published Nigerian-American poet, writer, and editor born in Zaria, Nigeria. She is also the author of the debut poetry collection UN-AMERICAN from Wesleyan University Press (2020), which was a 2021 NAACP Image Award, a 2021 PEN Open Book Award finalist, and longlisted for the 2021 Brooklyn Public Library Literary Prize. Her poetry and prose have appeared in The New Yorker, Tin House, Boston Review, Longreads, and McSweeney’s Indelible in the Hippocampus, among others. Through her writing, editorial work, and advocacy, she has a deep engagement with a number of organizations centered on writing and justice, including VONA/Voices, Bread Loaf, Cave Canem, PEN America, and Poets House in NYC and she has served on the board of VIDA: Women in the Literary Arts. Her memoir, The Black Period: On Personhood, Race & Origin, (Random House) is a New Yorker Magazine Best Book of 2022, a Good Morning America Anticipated Book, and an Amazon’s Best of the Month Editor’s Pick.

Before joining Janklow, Literary Agent Hafizah Geter was most recently an Editor at Little A and Topple Books at Amazon Publishing where she worked on award winning fiction and nonfiction, including New York Public Library and NPR Best Books of the Year.

As a queer Nigerian-American woman, and as the child of a Muslim-Nigerian immigrant and a Black American man born in Jim Crow Alabama, Literary Agent Hafizah Geter is particularly keen to read stories from marginalized writers, especially African and Indigenous writers, and writers from the South. She is excited by narratives that, regardless of genre, address disability justice, environmental justice, or transgender justice in some way, and stories that push against Islamophobia, anti-blackness, and heteronormativity. She believes, unequivocally, that black lives matter. As an agent, writer, and human, she is in love with stories. She is looking to take on writers who feel the same.
