After college he went to France and spent a year reading all the world literature he hadn’t gotten around to in school. In 1960, after Literary Agent Nat Sobel had worked at Dell Publishing, Barney Rosset offered him a job as the assistant sales manager at Grove Press. Over the next ten years, he rose to become Grove’s vice president and marketing director and played a central role in the company’s well-chronicled success during that period.
