Several months ago I developed a new habit that you might want to adopt for yourself. That’s because this one simple strategy could help you get a top literary agent, publisher, and book deal. It could also help you get your book written in the first place. And it could help you achieve any other goal that you have
Sound too good to be true?
That’s okay…
I don’t expect you to follow me blindly (it would be nice, but I know it’s not realistic). So, I’m going to make a case for why you should establish this new habit. Then I’m going to share my personal story. And, I’m going to tell you how you can learn more AND get free 1-on-1 support to get started (or take your existing habit to the next level).
How cool is that?

Your New Habit
Now, I can’t speak for you… but I often feel overwhelmed. That’s because I have lots of responsibilities (work, clients, a wife, other family members, a home, a car, other material possessions, and two cats to worry about). I also have lots of aspirations (getting in the best shape of my life, getting my own books published, taking dream vacations and castle tours, moving to California, buying an Aston Martin or Maserati – haven’t decided yet, and doing more charity work).
Maybe you can relate?
As a result of my “overwhelm” I’m often left thinking, I don’t have enough time! Just ask my wife. She’ll tell you that “I don’t have time” used to be one of my top ten expressions whenever she would ask me to do anything. But that all changed (literally, like magic) a few months ago… after I read a book by one of my new coaching clients, Bryce Chapman.
Bryce is from Australia and the title of his book got my attention immediately. It also made me believe that Bryce might be able to solve my overwhelm problem (or at least help me improve it). The title of the book was/is 5AM Wake-Up Call: How to Get More Sleep, Unleash Your Passion, and Live a Rich Life.

Step Aside Tony Robbins
There’s a new success guru in town…
Now, I know, getting up at 5 AM will probably sound insane to most people, but it’s not what you think. Living a 5 AM life isn’t about getting up at 5 AM every day. It’s also not about getting less sleep; it’s about getting more sleep. Bryce does a much better job explaining it than I ever could, so I’m going to let him tell you what it’s about. But first, here’s the testimonial I wrote for Bryce this morning (after getting up at 5 AM):
“I was skeptical when Bryce told me that getting up at 5 AM would make me happier and more productive (and let me sleep more). But he was so passionate about it, I had to listen. Then I started reading about the science of a 5 AM life. I looked at the success stories. And (most important) I tried it! Establishing my 5 AM habit was a lot easier than I thought it would be (I’ve never been a morning person; in fact, I almost flunked out of college because of it). Now I’m more focused and productive. I’m working out again for the first time in 20 years. My business is booming. I have more confidence. And I’m having more fun. That’s because success is fun (so is feeling like you’re in control of your life)! Even my marriage is better (it wasn’t bad before… but if you’re an entrepreneur or work in the corporate world you know the strain that all those hours can put on your relationships). If you’re thinking about becoming a 5 AM-er, or if you want to take your existing 5 AM life to the next level, check out Bryce’s website and set up an introductory call with him. Bryce is the real deal.”

I used to be the perfect Optimist…I wrote a book, Roaming Spirits and got it published in 2005 while my oldest son was serving in Iraq. He was fighting for our country and I was being taken by Port Town Publishing which went out of business after the owner took the money of about forty authors and ran with it. She did get caught and out of business however, she is back to writing and actually getting her self published books on good reads. I loved my story but the book got published without [???]. Roaming Spirits never was edited. I was green. I have attended writer’s workshops for over seven years…monthly. Paying $150.00 a month. Finished a 100,000 word, ghost story, “Don’t Play With Emily” fictional, based on an actual event. It’s been over edited. I have gotten up at five a.m. and worked 12 hour shifts as a Registered Nurse for over thirty years and stayed up nights and weekends writing. Now that describes my passion. Writing. I continue to submit my query to agents.
Dear Phillis,
Thanks for sharing that with us all, sounds like you have a busy life as well…..rising at 5am for a 12 hour shift followed by your writing! Well done. Keep going and by the way, Mark is a genius at writing query letters and helping authors get published. Thanks. Bryce.
Hi Phyllis, sorry to hear about your experience with Port Town Publishing. I hate hearing those stories. But I’m glad to know that you learned from it and you’re still moving forward. Don’t hesitate to post a question for me on the Ask a Literary Agent page of my site if I can help you in any way. Here is the link: https://literary-agents.com/ask-a-literary-agent/. Here’s to being a realistic optimist, and thank you for sharing. Mark
Hi Mark,
I’m already up at 5 a.m. because I work from 10 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. My best time to get things done is from 6 to 11 a.m. on weekdays. On weekends, I keep the same schedule–really. I’m up all night, either working on my sequel or watching TV. It’s crazy but so far it works.
Thanks Juanita,
Wow that does sound like a hectic schedule! I love these stories about how we adapt to work schedules, different time tables and commitments as well as trying to fit in our passions with writing. What a wonderful world we live in, all doing our own thing! Get the stories out there, life is interesting. Thanks. Bryce.
Hey Juanita, congratulations! You’re already a 5amer. 🙂 Although you’re doing it differently. Bottom line is your setting good goals and doing what you need to do to achieve. I know that’s true because you’re in the process of marketing your finished book. So be proud. And, equally important, continue being persistent. I’ve got your back. Mark
Oh, and I’ll respond to your private email later today. Mark
already work around the clock. Even when I was 10, I got up around 3am, so if anything, I’d like to learn to sleep more than 2-3hours at a time, so I think this is really not for me. I can’t help my size. I’ve had a lifetime of bullying and harassment over my body and ugly face including half a lacrosse team at an international tournament that I was shooting. so good luck. It’d be so so nice to be able to live a halfway “normal” life and not work around the clock, eat meals and have shoes.
Just so you all know I still have a spot left for my new beta 6 week 5am Wake Up Course. This is over $4000 worth for FREE! If you haven’t already down loaded my free mp3 recording at www.5amwakeupcall.com and emailed me at bryce@5amwakeupcall.com to tell me you would like to be part of it, do it now. For those who have, get those questionnaires back ASAP so you can schedule in your initial call. Once again, thanks very much. Bryce Chapman.
Hi Bryce, have I told you lately that I love you for doing this. I’m just glad I caught you in the early stages of your new business and you were willing to make this offer to my list. Have a great weekend and talk soon. Mark
G’day all
For all those who have left a post regarding a 5am Wake Up Call I would like to say a big thank you. Your messages have been great & it has been a pleasure replying to them individually. Deep down we all know an early rising habit is good for us but equally, it can be hard to make the habit. The benefits far outweigh the effort required & it will make an incredible difference to your life. If you are writing a book it works, no question about it. Try it tomorrow. You owe it to yourself
Hi Mark,
I can only agree with a 5 am start, I’ve been doing it for very nearly my entire life however is hasn’t brought fame and fortune; more a deep loathing of alarm clocks and you can’t buy a newspaper over here until 6 am unless you go to fleet street (in the city of London). The 5 am start has never done me any harm but realistically I don’t think it’s done me any good either. It was brought about by work ethics, there was no grand plan behind it.
Brian
Hi Brian, that’s good to hear. Maybe success is a better word? Everyone can interpret it in their own way. Fame and fortune is one possibility. So is renewed confidence and fulfillment. So it’s all good. And you make a good point, that waking up early can have little or no benefit if there isn’t some powerful purpose behind it. Most people can’t get up that early without the purpose, so you’ve done good. Have a great week and hope to hear from you again soon. Mark
Dear Brian,
I am so glad to hear that you are already a 5amer!
Try thinking of your “alarm” clock (alarm usually means an alert to disaster or emergency) differently. Try setting your opportunity clock to 5am! Over the last 10 years I have added a “grand plan” to my early morning habit and it has made an enormous difference to my life. Try one more thing for me Brian. Spend the next month on one specific thing each morning, something you find hard to find the time to do. Let me know how you go.
This is exciting and helpful news to be sharing. I can agree because I’ve always been a morning person and I really do get up at 5 a.m. It’s the best time to get some personal things accomplished before my grandson wakes up. Also, I, too, have a kitty…Angel. (It’s her name, but she doesn’t always act like one.) LOL Thank you for providing another positive message, Mark. I’m wishing the best for everyone involved. :>
Hey Rhymster, I’m surprised to learn how many people already get up at 5 am. It really is a brilliant way to avoid interruptions and find amazing focus. My wife and I have two cats as well, Ginger and Fudge (brother and sister, we adopted them). They’re angels, too. Have a great weekend and thanks for posting. Mark
Thanks Rhymster,
Oh yes the kids.
I have 4 beautiful kids & unbeknown to them whilst they have slept over the past few years I have written a book, jogged on the beach, gone to the gym, worked on my business and put my life in balance to create the rich life we, as a family, all now enjoy. Little do they know, by the time I take them to school so much is achieved! Well done for getting the jump on your grandson. Thanks. Bryce.
Hi Mark
Interesting. As meditators, we’re supposed to wake up at 3 a.m. but outside of a meditation retreat, I could only wake up after 12pm and that’s because I sleep at 5 a.m and 8 a.m. I like the silence of early hours. I have tried sleeping by midnight and getting up around 7 am and I find I have better concentration in the morning and the mind is fresher. So if you wake up two hours earlier, you’d be chirpy and clear-headed as a bird, all fired to go on your manuscript or whatever.
Hi SawLian. Bryce talks about those things as well. There are many benefits to getting an early start… and most important… it doesn’t mean sleeping less. Have a chirpy weekend and thanks for posting. Mark
Dear Sawlian,
There are many forms of meditation. I have experienced mornings where time shifts whilst I am in deep thought while writing my book. The habit of early rising has been practiced for thousands of years in meditation as the mind is fresh and you are closest to godliness. Wether you meditate, talk to god or access your own inner strength no matter how you cut it the benefits are apparent. My program puts the focus back to your own life, living a dream & keeping it in balance. Thanks.
If you like quiet times, then it’s best to work when there is silence and that may not be early in the morning depending on where you live.
Hi Vitch, good point… thanks for taking time to post, and have a great weekend! Mark
Dear Vitch,
White noise is all around us now distracting us from focus & clarity without us knowing it. Yes, you are right, getting silence is essential. The good thing about a 5am Wake Up habit is that your mind is also biologically fresh, having rested overnight after processing yesterdays data. Therefore, you have the benifit of it being quiet plus have a fresh mind primed for a new day. Why not start filling it up with what you really want, like a dream, before the day takes hold? Thanks.
G’Day Mark! Love this!
I recently “discovered” this little trick of the 5am wakeup call when I was “under deadline” to keep my promise to the agency interested in me by having Tough Luck Lane to them, complete, by the end of July. You know, that “21st Query Letter” 🙂
I’m a morning person anyway so it wasn’t a big stretch. But it helped give me that “oomph!” to get stuff done and, I liked it!
So now I’m looking forward to focusing with Bryce Chapman and a new sense of life-balance. Thanks!
G’Day right back at you Lois… and happy weekend! Have I told you lately that I love your commitment to your writing. Looking forward to hearing what you think about Bryce’s work. All my best. Mark
Dear Lois,
That little “oomph” is what it is all about. If we get up that bit earlier each day & work on something special such as health & fitness, a book, a degree, a promotion, a new language etc you will succeed. I am a strong believer in taking action. That doesn’t mean I have to climb Mt. Everest, but means writing a page of my book every day for 250 days, until it’s finished, walking till I feel like running, till I am fit and in shape. Step after step, page after page you will finish.
Thank you, Bryce. I thoroughly enjoyed your MP3 presentation and it was a lot of information. It’ll take me a minute to digest 🙂 but I get it. So what did I do? I made a plan and “stepped up” to carry on a local writers’ group. I hope you and Mark won’t mind my sharing your websites and information as valuable resources to enjoy! Hoping I get some positive response and who knows who knows whom at these things? Anything can happen and I’m open to an adventure now!
Dear Lois,
I am so glad you liked the mp3 recording and yes, it does have a lot of information in it, most of it you can try right now in your life. Writers groups are fantastic and I am very pleased you would like to share Mark and my details, after all, we just want people to live their dream and if that is to become an author our strategies really work. That’s how I completed my own book, each morning at 5am. I just love it, so much can be achieved! Thanks again and all the best. Bryce.
5AM? It should be illegal to be awake before 8. I have to get up for work at 5:30 every day, and it’s the thing I like least about my job.
My IQ is twenty points lower before noon.
Hi Laura, I know… I know… I used to think the same thing. Bryce’s magic is that he makes people (including me) look forward to getting up early. I know it doesn’t make any sense at first, but now I’m one of those “early morning” people that I used to make fun of. Oh well. I know you’ll still love me anyway, as long as I don’t call you at 5 am. Have a great weekend! Mark
Laura,
I love it!
My program is about living a rich life. My question is, do you love your job? I am guessing no. Maybe that’s why you would rather be sleeping. That’s fine, in fact very good. I would love to know what your dream job is? What is it that would make jumping out of bed exciting? If it’s not work then maybe a passion, dream or desire. That is the key. Life’s meant to be great. Most of us forget to ask ourselves these questions and just keep busy. I am here to ask those questions.
Thanks for your comment.
There are things I love about my work as a teacher. I love teaching. It’s some of the testing and standards crap that bogs me down. But happily, I will be retiring early at the end of this year to pursue writing full time. Scary and wonderful at the same time. I can live cheaply. I did it before, so I can do it again. I will have to, since i will be moving to seattle, and withnthe price of real estate the all I can afford is a phone booth.
P.s. Even after I retire I don’t plan to rise at 5 am. 😀
Thanks again Laura.
It sounds like you have some big changes coming up in your life, how exciting. Especially if you can make becoming a writer part of that. It sounds like you will have plenty of time in your day to write but for me, I am still in the trenches. Business, kids, staying fit, busy, busy, busy makes my writing a bit hard. The 5am Wake Up Call was the only way I could bring my burning desire to the beginning of the day, before “life” took over. Once again, thanks for your post.
Circadian Rhythm/mindset and study skills were today’s topic with one of my students. My aunt was a 4amer and I was on her speed dial. I’m not a morning person and learning that took a long time, but on the other hand, I live the 4/5am lifestyle without apologies in my own comfortable circadian time frame. Everyone has to find their own 4am and let it drive the rest. Very serious health issues have blown up to crimp my 4am successes. Good concept tho..an idea whose time is now!
Hi Jeanann, I hope your aunt wasn’t calling you at 4am. 😉 Have a great weekend and here’s to your good health. Mark
Thanks Jeanann,
Circadian Rhythm is a great point. Our deep bedded rhythm is to sleep and rise with the sun setting and rising however, TV, computers and lights have put that into confusion. A 5am Wake Up Call can bring that back into balance and in doing so increase brain activity and efficiency. Bad habits can be hard to change but we can if we really want to. Once a 5am habit is made it is surprisingly easy to maintain especially once you start achieving a few long over due goals or dreams.
I’ve been trying to wake up early for years! Some nights I don’t get to bed until 5am let alone wake up at 5am. I like the concept… but so far it’s only been a concept. I like to work in the quiet of the quiet of the night. I realize the day and night have different energies, and although nighttime is a more creative time for me, the day time probably offers a higher energy for accomplishing things.
Hi Gil… Bryce would say that you can still probably make it work… but you’d definitely be the hardest person to convert to a 5am life. 😉 My wife has trouble going to sleep early so it’s challenging for her as well. You might want to check Bryce’s site out, but of course you have to decide what’s right for you. I’ll remain a fan no matter time you get up in the morning. Have a good weekend and see you again soon I hope. Mark
One day this week I will wake up at 5am just to experience it! I forgot to mention that the first time I spoke with you, I saw the two of you in California. If that is your desire that window is open for you within the next 18 to 24 months. 🙂
Hi Gil, glad to hear it. At some point in your life you must have done it already… for something important like a trip, etc. By the way, been trying to reply to your private email but it keeps bouncing. This has happened before so you should look into it. And regarding CA, it’s on our to do list during that time frame. 😉 Have a great day and talk soon. Mark
Dear Gil,
I love it that you have challenged yourself to get up at 5am one day this week, maybe you already have since your post. I also see that you like working at night, well thats also good. What I get from you is that you are passionate, authentic and ambitious….that great. I’d be happy to give you 6 weeks to work through my program & forge a productive habit from all that passion & bring balance to your life, I’m thinking by working all night something may be out of balance. Let me know.
Wow Bryce, thank you so much… I’m going to take you up on that!
All I wanted to know was how long it takes after an agent asks for sample chapters does it usually take them to get back with an answer. I did not understand that you were charging for answers to questions..
Hi Cindy, there is no charge for questions here on my blog (only if someone wants to schedule an introductory consulting call with me here: https://literary-agents.com/book-marketing/book-marketing-coach/). Regarding your question, it’s a good one and I actually wrote an article on the topic that you can find here: https://literary-agents.com/get-a-literary-agent/literary-agent-turnaround-times/. Let me know what you think and have a great weekend. Mark
Sounds interesting, but I manage to get a lot done even with my current busy life. I’m just too stubborn and determined not to. My productivity will go way up as soon as my son returns to school this coming week! I’ll have daytime hours to myself! YEAH!
It does sound like he’ll help a lot of people who are seeking balance and productivity! Judging from the amount of comments already on this post, I don’t think I’d make it to the top five. LOL Best of luck to everyone who made it!
Hi Becca, that’s okay. The “5 am Life” isn’t for everyone. And I know you’re a productive powerhouse, so it’s all good. If you did want to do it after listening to Bryce’s mp3, I’d put in a word. Maybe he’d take one more. Or, maybe it’s not too late after all. 😉 Either way, have a great weekend and happy back to school time. Mark
It’s hard to get up at 5 when you go to bed at 1 because you work nights. LMAO! I’ve gotten up that early before (usually when I can’t get back to sleep after my hub leaves for work). I get a bunch done, but then have to have a nap to be “human.”
I went and checked out his site, but I haven’t had a chance to listen to the MP3 yet. I’ll keep him in mind. 😉 Thanks for the offer of a “word.”
I’m assuming the whole “5 AM” thing doesn’t have to be literal. I imagine the entire program is structuring yourself (mentally and physically) for more productivity and a higher output and success rate. I can understand that and know that all people aren’t going to be on the actual “time schedule.”
Yeah, um… that won’t work. You need the freedom to go to bed earlier. And the 5 am term, for the most part, is literal. But don’t let it scare you. It’s not nearly as bad as it sounds. 😉 Mark
Dear Becca,
Thanks for your post.
Sounds like you would like to give a 5am wake up call a go but presently work till 1am, which would make it hard. I agree. It’s about getting more sleep, not less. What I would say is this, my strategy is to look at all foundations of life, including work, & getting a balance. Is this your dream job? Is it holding you back? Maybe I could help you find balance, live your dreams & really change your life. If that excites you I’ll fit you in no matter what!
I figured you could make your strategy “fit” anyone’s life and time frames. Good strategies do that. I’m sure you’re going to help a lot of people — I might even be one of them someday! Your site looks great, btw.
Thanks Becca,
The most important part of my strategy is what you do during the first 15 to 60 minutes each morning. If you work till 1am that time may not be literally at 5am, but just at the beginning of your day. You need to put the things you really want to do first, day after day. Glad you liked the site. If you’re ever looking for a fresh strategy you now know how to find me.Thanks very much. Bryce
Yes! I am going set my clock for 5am Monday morning because I can’t sleep and I never have enough time! Plus if you recommend it Mark, then I know I can trust it. Thanks for sharing and I will keep you aprised of my progressl
Have a great weekend,
deb
Hi Debbie, just make sure you check out Bryce’s site and listen to his mp3. I don’t think I would have been able to do that without getting his perspective on HOW to do it first. Anyway, good to hear from you. Thanks for posting and have a great weekend! Mark
Dear Debbie,
Great post!
If you start getting up at 5am I am sure you will start having a better nights sleep (deeper and sounder). When I go the sleep at around 9.30pm I read for a bit and then I’m out like a light, I love it, that feeling of being ready for sleep knowing that when I wake up I have an hour or two to work on my dreams without anyone interrupting me……fantastic! Think of a dream (writing a book?) & give it a go. If you need any help check out my web site. Thanks. Bryce
Wow! I had to get up at 5AM every day for one summer and it almost KILLED ME! But, you know, I can see the benefits. No one else is awake then, so it’s a prime time for productivity. Hmmm… I’ll have to check out Bryce’s website!
Hi Jessica, I never thought I’d be able to do it… but the way Bryce explains it makes it simple and hard to resist. The best part is you actually get more sleep as a result. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true. Let me know what you think about Bryce’s site and have a great weekend! Mark
Dear Jessica,
I love it that you have experienced a period of getting up at 5am & have tasted of the benefits that result. Yes, it can be tough, especially when you stay up late as well, so remember the habit requires discipline at bed time as well as in the morning. I have a few great tips on making the habit both enjoyable & easy so you should listen to my mp3 recording. One is to have a burning desire to work on when you wake up, something you are passionate about, like writing a book!
Thanks’ Mark, this is a good key to success. I too am an early riser and don’t need an alarm clock. I spent 21 years in the Military, so I’m very use to early rising. I start my day between 5am to about 5:15am. I shave first and then work out from 5:30 – 7:30, I then shower and get dressed and then do some writing and reading before I have to be at work at 9am or 9:30. for some reason, I feel refreshed, rejuvenated and ready get things done. But my wife, sleeps like she has been drugged.
Hi Larry! I was eating a salmon and vegetable omelet with my wife this am… when I snuck a look at your comment on my iphone. But then I got caught because you made me laugh out loud with the very unexpected (and funny) last line of your comment. I love that you’re already a 5amer. I hope you check Bryce’s site out anyway. Although you’ve already established your 5am habit, he’s a got a lot of other great stuff to help you take it to the next level. If you do, let me know what you think. Mark
Dear Larry,
I love your habit!
People like you truly understand the power of discipline & the fact that most good things in life requires effort, and is worth it! The 2 hrs you work between 5.30 – 7.30 are worth 4 hrs during the rest of the day. Super-productivity before the kids, before work & before your day takes hold. Also, the energy you create at that hour working towards a dream will form another habit, a habit of high energy and success & will carry through your day. Thanks again. Bryce.
Well Happy Friday Mark! And how fabulous your column on Bryce’s message was! I wake up at 3 each morning, without an alarm, (granted I go to bed before most preschoolers in this world do), but there is alacrity in watching our world morph from “darkness into Light,” seeing stars, a sunrise, and accomplishing so much, before noon! (That I’m grilling my main meal at 8 a.m. does scare the neighbors, as does my octopus & palate). Viva we early morning risers nonetheless! Cheers, & great message!
Hi Leah, and WOW. 3 am is eeeeeearly. But as long as you’re going to bed before the babes, as you say, it’s all good. Here’s to many wonderful sunrises. You better enjoy them since you probably go to bed before sunset. 😉 Mark
Dear Leah,
It’s funny how us early risers can be so passionate about our habit. For sure the change from darkness to daylight has a quality that seems to add power to your day, thats why so many people take a photo at sunrise. But when you use that time to work on a personal dream day after day with persistence, the results are truly amazing….you actually succeed with what you are doing. Thanks for your post and stay passionate. Thanks. Bryce.
This makes great sense to me, Mark! Thanks for the info!
Hi Jalynn. Bryce’s website is great and he’s the real deal… successful but also down-to-earth and genuine. He’s also a great teacher and guide. Let me know what you think of his site, mp3, etc. And have a great weekend! Mark
Mark,
Loved the info in the MP3. I listened to and responded to this as soon as I got your e-mail this morning. But when I sent a message to Bryce, I got a standard response saying listen to the MP3 (which I’d already done and referred to in the note I sent him), so sadly, I don’t think I got on his beta list.
I wish I had because I’ve got some remarkable opportunities ahead of me and the quandary is how to focus attention on all and achieve success.
Cheers!
Jalynn
Dear Jalynn,
Thanks very much for listening to my mp3 recording, I love it that you are excited and would love to be part of my beta group. I’ll email you shortly so you can schedule our first meeting as well as some home work for you to do before we start. You are going to be amazed at how well this program works, so dream big and I’ll help you make it happen. Waking up at 5am is great fun when you have a burning desire & are working on bringing a dream to life! Well done……Bryce
